The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
